Throwback to early June 2016 and Arsene Wenger was at it again, trying to sign a striker on the cheap. We all remember the Luis Suarez drama and a similar saga was underway last year.
Reports came out that Arsene fancied a look at last season’s Leicester phenomenon, Jamie Vardy. The rumours were stating that the Gunners had lodged a £20 – £25 Million bid for the former non-league star before the European Championships had even begun. After the unbelievable season that the Foxes (500-1 to win the Prem remember!) which included Vardy scoring in eleven straight games, the press well and truly lapped up the transfer bid.
From the 3rd June to the 8th June, the Index was well and truly in a Vardy Party. There were talks of films being released in his honour, interviews with his wife and constant speculation. This all equals one thing, BUZZ. Vardy winning it six, yes six, days in a row. A return of 30p a future if held for the six days. His price was around £1.20 at this point meaning an ROI of 25% in six days! Phenomenal stats. When you add in the fact that Vardy stated he would make his final decision after the Euro’s the speculation dragged on winning him five more buzz wins in the rest of June, meaning he won the buzz more than once every three days! What a month.
Even though the transfer never happened it goes to show you what speculation can do on the Index. Interestingly enough Vardy himself was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid today according to The Independent. Could it be a Vardy June once more?
