Super Sub With 9 Minute Heroics

Last night’s Bundesliga match between Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg produced one of the finest individual performances likely to be seen all season, with Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski helping himself to five goals in just 9 breathtaking minutes – and all that after only coming on the pitch as a half-time substitute.

After a lackluster first half performance in the final third which saw Bayern trail their opponents 1-0 at the break, manager Pep Guardiola decided that his team needed an injection of quality and danger and replaced Thiago Alcantara with Lewandowski. Within 15 minutes after being introduced to the game, the prolific Pole already had five goals to his name, a feat which left everyone in the ground, watching on TV and those using Social Media gobsmacked at what they were witnessing and hearing about.

With Bayern dominating possession in the early stages of the game, last seasons Bundesliga runners-up Wolfsburg took a shock lead mid-way through the first half-half with a Daniel Caligiuri goal produced on the counter-attack. Despite a commanding first half display, Bayern had nothing to show for their dominance with a lack of spark up front prompting the introduction of Lewandowski and a cue to his heroics. Within five minutes of the restart, the substitution had already paid dividends as Thomas Muller and the former Borussia Dortmund striker combining to make it 1-1. With three more goals added in quick succession, Lewandowski’s fifth was the pick of the bunch, connecting with a sweet volley that flew past the goalkeeper and into the goal. If that wasn’t enough, he was only denied a sixth goal by a goal-line clearance by Ricardo Rodriguez.

After the game, Bayern manager Pep Guardiola was left seemingly shocked at his star strikers new record of the fastest five goal haul in Bundesliga history and said; I can’t really understand it. Five goals. Neither as a coach nor as a player did I ever experience something like this and I can’t really explain it. Five goals against Wolfsburg is never easy. I am very happy for Robert.” After seeing his side undone from a winning position by such a unique performance, Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking was also stunned at what he had just witnessed; What can I say? A world-class striker shot five times on goal and could have scored seven. That is how it happened.
