The Dutch Eredivisie has long been considered one of the most fertile leagues for producing top footballing talent. A quick glance at last season’s campaign indicates the potential value of some of the league’s young talent on the Index, with many of Ajax’s starlets in particular seeing massive gains over the year. Matthijs de Ligt (£2.28) peaked at a whopping £3.43 earlier in the summer, while Frenkie de Jong (£2.16) remains closer to his peak price, having reached as high as £2.26 in the past. Both of these starlets have since made the step up to one of Europe’s major footballing giants, with de Ligt joining Juventus and de Jong heading over to Barcelona respectively. But who will be the breakout stars in the Eredivisie this season? With the season only just kicking off, several stars are already starting to catch the eye…
First up we have AZ Alkmaar’s young striker Myron Boadu (£1.24). The 18 year old initially caught the eye at the beginning of last season. However, upon starting the 2018/2019 campaign in red-hot fashion, Boadu was unfortunately forced out for most of the season through a serious knee injury. Nonetheless, 3 goals in 8 games was enough to offer a glimpse of his potential. After any major injury there are always fears that a player may struggle to return to their previous form, but Boadu seems to have put his injury woes of last season behind him. Boadu has already scored one goal in his 2 Eredivise appearances, as well as also scoring in Eruopa league qualification. On top of this, Boadu is currently leading the line as the Dutch league’s most formidable playmaker with 3 assists, proving he is just as handy when it comes to supplying the goals as he is putting them in the back of the net. Arsenal were reportedly close to signing Boadu back in 2016 and if he can carry on with his early-season form, it will surely only be a matter of time until another big club are in the hunt for his signature.
Another future star for AZ Alkmaar is their Dutch winger Calvin Stengs (98p). Stengs has started the season in formidable form, having already notched up 2 goals and 4 assists across 6 games for AZ in both league and Europe. Stengs was the star of the show during AZ’s recent Europa League qualifying win against Mariupol. The Dutch side ran out 4-0 winners, with Stengs managing 2 assists and 1 goal during the rout. AZ currently top the Dutch league following an outstanding start to the season and with both Boadu and Stengs supplying the goals, they will have every reason to feel that they can pose a serious threat to the established hierarchy of Ajax and PSV this season.
Another prospect waiting in the wings is Groningen’s Japanese starlet Ritsu Doan (63p). Doan has hit 14 goals in two seasons since joining Groningen and he has already gotten off the mark again this season. His exploits for Groningen haven’t gone unnoticed and he was nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy award in 2018 (which was eventually won by Mattijs de Ligt. Having achieved all this by the age of 21 and it’s easy to see why Doan is being touted as a future star.
With the season only just having kicked off, these are just some of the diamonds in the rough, who could well push on to become future favourites on the Football Index. If the early signals are anything to go by, you’ll want to snap up these starlets before they well and truly explode!
