La Liga Preview: Match Day 8

A mixed performance in the midweek European competitions sets up another enthralling weekend of action in La Liga.

Real Betis kick off the action under the Friday night lights, but can they bounce back after a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Villarreal? Can Real Madrid put aside their poor form in Europe to stay top? And are we about to see Leganes earn their first win of the season?

We are in store for a cracking weekend of football in Spain.

La Liga Match of the Weekend: Real Madrid vs Granada | Saturday 3.00 pm

Real Madrid host high-flying Granada in an unlikely first against second clash in La Liga on Saturday, as they look to ease the pressure on coach Zinedine Zidane after another disappointing outing in the Champions League.

Real Madrid have won their last eight league games against Granada, scoring 28 goals in total. However, this game may prove to be a little different than what history suggests.

Granada have returned to the top tier of Spanish football in emphatic fashion, spearheaded by Roberto Soldado who has scored 5 goals against Los Blancos in the past, the side feel they are primed to deliver a statement performance at the Bernebeu.

For all the talented forward players at Zidane’s disposal, Madrid have struggled in attack. Scoringย 12 goals after seven games in La Liga this season, it is their lowest tally at this stage in over a decade.

To further compound the league leaders’ concerns, Granada’s promotion from the second tier and eye-catching start to this season has been built off a base of defensive solidarity.

For all their ongoing concerns, Los Blancos sit top of the La Liga standings heading into this game. It will be a game that tests the metal of Zidane as a coach, but also the credentials of a Granada side full of optimism.

Rest of the weekend:

There are also some key games to keep an eye on from La Liga over the weekend.

Barcelona host Sevilla in an intriguing match-up on Sunday night.

Valverde’s side overcame a first-half deficit to beat a rolling Inter Milan team in the week and signs could well be on the up for the Spanish champions after a turbulent start to the campaign.

Leganes could be set to earn their first in of the season as they host Levante in a game you feel is crucial for the side to get their season finally going.

The Yellow Submarine head to Osasuna on the back of a sensational performance against Real Betis. Winning 5-1, the side will be confident going to El Sadar with Osasuna losing their last four La Liga games against Villarreal, conceding at least three goals in each.

La Liga Player to Watch: Luis Suarez vs Sevilla (ยฃ0.95)

Amongst growing competition in the forward department at Barcelona, Luis Suarez demonstrated his sheer excellence midweek against Inter Milan.

Buoyed by the return of Lionel Messi, the Uruguyians connection with the returning talisman was instant and clear to see.

As Griezmann continues to find his fitting in Valverde’s side and Ousmane Dembele continues to regain fitness, I expect Valverde to look to this dynamic duo to overcome a strong Sevilla team.

Whilst it could be the Lionel Messi show, I anticipate Suarez to be amongst the goals against Sevilla, competiting for in-play and Match Day Dividends.
