The second round of fixtures concluded on Sunday evening with a 7 goal thriller at Camp Nou. Antoine Griezmann took all the headlines on his competitive home debut, but all in all, it was a low-scoring weekend prior to that game with defences coming out on top across La Liga.
Los Blancos were frustrated at home in a draw to Valladolid whilst their capital rivals Atletico won a hard-fought game against Leganes courtesy of super-sub Vitolo.
39% of the goals scored in Match Day 2 came at Camp Nou, and expectations for Match Day 3 are on the rise ahead of the first international break of the season.
Serie A Match of the Weekend: Athletic Bilbao vs Real Sociedad
One of the biggest rivalries in Spanish football, the Basque Derby will be on the Friday night stage this week.
Both teams have started the season unbeaten across the first two Match Day’s and three points for either side will see them temporarily top the La Liga table and most importantly, wield local bragging rights.
The 146th LaLiga meeting between the clubs from the Basque Country’s two biggest cities should be crucial in setting the tone for what could well be excellent seasons for both teams.
Athletic are unbeaten at San Mames in La Liga under Gaizka Garitano, however, they have also lost their last three games to Real Sociedad so something you think would have to give.
Iñaki Williams has played 121 consecutive LaLiga games and recently signed a nine-year contract which includes a €135m release clause.

Rest of the weekend:
Sevilla will look to hold on to their top spot in La Liga when they host Celta Vigo at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in the other Friday night game. Real Madrid will be tested once more away at Villarreal plus Real Betis will look to put their opening two defeats behind them as they host Leganes.
La Liga Player to Watch: Joao Felix vs Eibar (£4.68)
Atletico’s record signing has shown glimpses early on in his La Liga career.
So far, Atleti have narrowly defeated Leganes and Getafe 1-0, with Simeone’s side winning by the sheer will of quality over the opposition.
For this weekend, however, I expect the side to demonstrate more of their attacking prowess as they welcome Eibar to the Wanda Metropolitano.
For this game specifically, I expect Eibar to offer up more space for Atleti than their previous opponents in the final third. By doing so, I anticipate the young Portuguese star to run the show and open up his goal-scoring account for the league campaign.
