After seven long weeks, we are back to look at all things Spanish football.
A lot has transpired since last time out, early pace-setters Granada have slightly dropped off the pace, and sit in a respectable 8th spot, and most remarkably, Leganes won their sole game of the season so far.
Barcelona & Real have clamoured back to the top of the standings in a routine sight with Atletico and Sevilla occupying the remaining Champions League spots as we approach the new year.
La Liga Match of the Weekend: Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona | Sunday 20:00
One of the marquee fixtures in the La Liga calendar, the storylines write themselves ahead of the showdown at the Wanda.
Diego Simeone’s side have been markedly better at home so far this season, and they will have to be at their best as Barcelona come to town on the back of one of their best displays this year.
Messi, Suarez and Griezmann all scored against Borussia Dortmund midweek and look to be finally gelling as an attacking trio after some early-season struggles. Needless to say, Antoine Griezmann can expect a frosty reception from the home faithful.
As for the man signed to fill that void, Joao Felix returned to first-team action midweek after an injury and was recently crowned the recipient of the prestigious Golden Boy award.
If ready, Simeone could bring the Portuguese starlet straight back to the first-team as Atleti hope to earn a statement win.
Best of the Rest:
There are also some key games to keep an eye on from La Liga over the weekend.
Deportivo Alaves vs Real Madrid | Saturday 12:00
Midday on Saturday sees Deportivo Alaves host Real Madrid in a game full of drama last season. When Alaves last hosted Real, they scored a 94th-minute winner to secure their first triumph over Los Blancos in 87 years.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s matchup, plenty of goals could be in store as Zidane’s side head to the Mendizorrotza Stadium in form and aggrieved that they didn’t see off PSG midweek.
Bilbao vs Granada | Sunday 13:00
La Liga Player to Watch: Karim Benzema vs Deportivo Alaves (£0.95)
🌟 @Benzema 🌟
🌟 Lionel Messi 🌟
— LaLiga (@LaLigaEN) November 27, 2019
Karim Benzema has been involved in six goals in his five league games against Alavés (three goals and three assists) and I expect the Madrid frontman to continue his rich run of form in La Liga.
Zidane’s side have been a more cohesive attacking unit as of late, which has only served to benefit Benzema who leads the Pichichi de La Liga rankings in the build-up to Match Day 15.
