After an extended sabbatical, Inside the Index returns for the New Year as it delves into all the activity on the Index.
January is always a hectic month in the football calendar, with the small matter of a transfer window looming over the fixtures that take place. It means that players are in the shop window, some more than others admittedly, as teams look to bolster their ranks for the second half of the season.

Sergio Aguero (£1.75) Sets Pair of Premier League Records
Manchester City gave a reminder at the weekend of what they’re capable of, in case anyone forgot, as they swept aside a relegation-threatened Aston Villa with consummate ease.
The 6-1 triumph at Villa Park however will go down in history thanks to the performance of Sergio Aguero. The 31-year-old’s second of the game took his tally in the Premier League to 176 goals, which is the most by a non-English player in the competition’s history, overtaking Thierry Henry’s record of 175.

City’s number ten wasn’t finished there however as he went on to score a hat-trick, taking his tally to 177, but also meaning he’s scored the most hat-tricks in the competition’s history (12).
Aguero’s share price has risen by 8p in the last four days, while his performances on the pitch proves he is still the man to spearhead Pep Guardiola’s attack.
Meteoric Rise for Bruno Fernandes (£4.54) Ahead of Proposed Move
Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes only signed a new contract with the club until 2023 in November, however it now appears his future lies away from the Portuguese side.
A move to Manchester United looks set for this window, sooner rather than later, with him dominating the Media Rankings as a result. He won on both Saturday and Sunday and is in a strong position to make it a hat-trick come the end of play today.
The move appears all-but complete if the words of Sporting’s head coach Silas is anything to go by. “I don’t like to think about it, but I’ll be thinking of alternatives in case Bruno leaves,” he said following the 3-1 weekend win over Vitoria Setubal.
The 25-year-old – who has risen by 71p in the last 24 hours – has 13 goals and ten assists for Sporting this season in all competitions and will likely provide some much-needed creativity for the Premier League side.
Ciro Immobile (£2.08) First to 20 League Goals in Europe’s Top Five Leagues
No other forward in Europe’s top five leagues this season has been in better form than Ciro Immobile, as the Italian reached an impressive milestone at the weekend.

The 29-year-old scored the winner for Lazio in a 1-0 win against Napoli, becoming the first player to notch 20 league goals this season.
His form has coincided with Lazio’s fine season in general. The Biancocelesti – who have won all of their last ten league games – currently sit third in Serie A, just three points behind league leaders Juventus with a game in hand, as the possibility of winning a first Scudetto since 2000 looks a genuine one.
Price Decrease for Injured Duo
Not everyone had an enjoyable weekend , as two players at contrasting stages of their careers were dealt injury blows that will see them out of action for some time.

Luis Suarez (£0.76) underwent surgery on a persistent knee injury on Sunday that will now see him sidelined for the next four months, resulting in a 24p price drop in the last 24 hours.
The news is a setback for the Catalan side, with the 32-year-old has scoring 11 La Liga goals this season as well as providing a league high seven assists.
Another player who suffered a likely season-ending injury is Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo (£2.07) after he sustained an ACL injury during the 2-1 defeat to Juventus on Sunday, resulting in a price drop of his own to the tune of 29p.
The 20-year-old – who has four goals and one assist in Serie A this season – is set to undergo surgery later today and is unlikely to feature again this season for Roma.
While their prices have dipped, it could be worth Traders looking into adding the pair ahead of a return to fitness, especially Zaniolo who could be fit in time for this summer’s Euro 2020 campaign with Italy.
