The Champions League returned to our screens last night in the shape of the round of 16 stage, with two of the group-stage winners already falling behind at the halfway point in their ties.

Reigning champions Liverpool endured a frustrating night at the same stadium that brought them so much joy eight months ago – going down 1-0 to a robust Atletico Madrid side at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The other tie last night was a far more exciting affair, as Borussia Dortmund will take a slender advantage to France’s capital in three weeks time following a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Tonight’s games will feature two debutants in the round of 16 stage in the shape of RB Leipzig and Atalanta, when they face Tottenham Hotspur and Valencia respectively.

Champions League Return Belongs to Erling Haaland

If anyone was still unsure as to what the fuss was all about regarding Erling Haaland (£5.95), then the 19-year-old gave another reminder last that the hype is genuine.

Making his Champions League debut for Borussia Dortmund, the Norwegian star netted both goals for the hosts in the 2-1 first-leg win over Paris Saint-Germain.

It takes his tally in the competition to ten – after scoring eight for Red Bull Salzburg in the group stages – to become the first player to score for two clubs in the competition in the same season, although in truth it’s getting hard keeping track of all his accomplishments this season.

Add to that him taking home Star Player, Top Forward and Media Dividends from last night, as well as rising by 41p in the last 24 hours, it proved to be a great night’s work for both Haaland and those Traders holding Shares in him.

Jordan Henderson Injury Caps Miserable Madrid Night for Reds

Liverpool’s return to the scene of their sixth Champions League triumph was not a fond one, as Saul Niguez’s fourth-minute strike saw Atletico Madrid secure a 1-0 win ahead of the return leg at Anfield.

As expected, Diego Simeone’s side frustrated the reigning champions by making the game as fragmented as possible, resulting in the Reds failing to have a shot on target in a game for the first time since a 1-0 defeat to Napoli in 2018.

Compounding the defeat was the injury sustained by captain Jordan Henderson (£1.54). The midfielder – who has two goals and three assists in his last five games – went off with ten minutes left to play with a hamstring injury.

While Jurgen Klopp after the game said Henderson was “not too concerned” by the injury, his Share Price has dropped by 12p in the last 24 hours, with the severity of the injury still unclear.

Tottenham Trio Enjoy Significant Rise

As confirmed yesterday, Son Heung-min (£1.92) has joined Harry Kane (£5.54) on the sidelines after sustaining a broken arm at the weekend, meaning both of Tottenham’s main goal threats will be absent for tonight’s Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie against RB Leipzig.

While the rise of Troy Parrott (£2.08) was acknowledged yesterday, three more Spurs players have enjoyed significant rises ahead of the first-leg.

Erik Lamela (£0.81) has enjoyed 10p increase in the last week, while Lucas Moura (£1.46) and Steven Bergwijn (£2.38) have risen by 10p and 8p in the last 24 hours respectively.

It certainly won’t be a conventional forward line for Spurs over the next few games due to injury, but does give other players the opportunity to stake a claim for a regular starting spot under Mourinho.

Bundesliga Duo Linked With Premier League Moves

Away from the Champions League now to some transfer news, as a pair of Bundesliga players have been liked with summer moves to the Premier League.

Firstly, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah (£1.13) has today become the latest centre-back lined up by Arsenal, if reports are to be believed. The 24-year-old – who has risen by 13p in the last 24 hours – has been linked with a move to north London in the past and it’s easy to see why.

At 6′ 4″, Tah is exactly the the type of centre-back the Gunners have missed for so long, while his pace and ball-playing ability makes him the perfect modern day defender.

The other Bundesliga star is Werder Bremen midfielder Milot Rashica (£2.14). The 23-year-old has enjoyed a 23p increase in the last 24 hours after reports surfaced of a potential move to Liverpool this summer.

With seven goals and three assists in the Bundesliga this season, the Kosovan international would represent a very impressive addition to the Reds’ squad for both the short and long term to bolster their already talented squad.
