City Edge Liverpool to the Title

Sunday saw the Premier League curtain come to a close and with it came the conclusion of one of the closest title races we have seen since the Premier League’s inception.

Man City were able to overcome an early scare down in Brighton and after securing a 4-1 victory, Pep Guardiola’s side made back to back titles.

City spread the goals across their side, with Sergio Aguero (£1.36) and Aymeric Laporte (£1.08) giving them a 2-1 lead at half time. Laporte’s goal ensured a very impressive Match Day score of 227 and this was enough for the Frenchman to win the defensive Dividends on a busy day of football. In the second half, Riyad Mahrez (£0.78) and Ilkay Gundogan (£0.63) eased the nerves for City fans and at this point, they finally knew the title was in the bag. Gundogan delivered an almighty point haul of 294 and considering he only scored one goal (and didn’t assist), this is a massive achievement for the German midfielder. Gundogan made it two Dividend wins on the bounce, as he was also the Star Player in his last outing for Man City during their 1-0 victory against Leicester back on the 6th May. It seems that Pep has taken a shine to playing Gundogan in the centre of the City midfield and should he maintain his starting berth next year, his current price of 63p may prove to be a bargain come the start of next season.

Although Liverpool were unable to secure their first title since the 1989/1990 season, the good-will at Anfield is positively shining through. Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Wolves meant they finished the season in 2nd place with an astonishing tally of 97 points. Whichever way you cut it, Liverpool have had a phenomenal season; the Reds lost just one game all season (away to Man City) and they also conceded the fewest goals (22) across the entire season.

Across the board, Liverpool’s players have been sensational this year. The recent defensive additions of Virgil van Dijk (£2.87) and Alisson (£0.63) have shored up their backline. VVD was voted Premier League player of the season and Alisson won the Golden Glove award for the season with an outstanding achievement of 21 clean sheets, just edging Ederson (£0.49), who managed a very respectable 20 clean sheets. Liverpool also boast two of the most productive full backs from an attacking outlet as well. The fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold (£2.81) and Andrew Robertson (£1.21) have both registered 12 and 11 assists each for the season, highlights the emphasis that Jurgen Klopp places on his full backs in order to supplement the attacking side of Liverpool’s game.

It is remarkable to think that by the end of the season, Liverpool could boast two of three Golden Shoe winners in Mohamed Salah (£4.94) and Sadio Mane (£2.49), both of whom notched up 22 Premier League strikes across the season. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£1.55) completed the trio of Golden Shoe winners after scoring a brace in Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Burnley. Aubameyang won the Media Dividends as a result of his achievement and having scored 5 goals in his last 2 matches, the Gabonese striker is on red-hot form. Aubameyang’s form will give the Gunners hope of overcoming Chelsea in the Europa League final in a do-or-die fixture for Emery’s men.

With the Premier League coming to a close, the attention will soon turn to the domestic cup and European finals. City could well make it a domestic clean sweep as they take on Watford, whilst Arsenal and Chelsea will make it a London derby over in Baku. But with Liverpool taking on Tottenham in the Champions League, the Reds will be looking to go one further than they were able to do so in their league campaign. Despite coming second, Liverpool have already made a massive statement this season and they now have one final match to really show the world what they are capable of.
