Chambers and Holding must be given chance to mend Arsenal’s defensive frailties

Arsenal and defensive issues. It is becoming far too frequent. David Luiz was signed to add ‘experience’ to the Gunners defence, but so far he has looked vulnerable, and given away two penalties in important moments of two away games.

Partnering him for the most part has been Greek defender Sokratis. He was probably the clubs best defender last season, but that’s not saying a lot. The 31-year-old has also looked wobbly, as highlighted in his error against Watford.

So now Arsenal are in a dilemma. They have already cast aside Skhodran Mustafi, who made several high profile errors last season – and the transfer window is shut. There are two potential internal solutions thought, and they are the English duo Calum Chambers and Rob Holding.

Chambers has always been on the fringes of the Arsenal team, and despite keeping a clean sheet against Newcastle in the season opener, he hasn’t featured in the first team since.

Arsenal have shipped 8 goals in the following 4 games, and Chambers must be wondering why he is not being trusted in the first team.

Especially when you consider that he was named Fulham’s player of the season last season, following a successful loan spell. It must be said though that the 24-year-old was much more impressive when featuring in midfield for Fulham than in defence. But Calum is clearly a much more mature and talented player than the one who seriously struggled at right-back for Arsenal a few seasons ago.

Holding has been injured for a very long time and now 23, the Englishman will be wanting to get into the starting eleven and help iron out the clubs defensive issues.

Although he’s only played 31 senior games for Arsenal, Holding has shown qualities that will encourage fans that he can improve this defence when he returns.

The Europa League, starting on Thursday, could offer an opportunity for the fit again Holding to get back to match fitness and work his way into the Premier League starting eleven.

William Saliba will be joining the club next season and Arsenal will no doubt be in the market for further reinforcements, but for now, Chambers and Holding may offer the Gunners an upgrade on their current showings.
