Finally, after two weeks of international football and all the tedium that can bring with it, club football returns and the Bundesliga is back with a bang this weekend thanks to a very exciting round of fixtures.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bayer Leverkusen kicks off the weekend on Friday evening and is the perfect curtain-raiser to an intriguing weekend in Germany’s top flight.
Bundesliga Match of the Week – Borussia Dortmund vs Borussia Mönchengladbach
The battle of the Borussias (or the Borussen Derby as it’s also known) almost guarantees goals. In the last 46 meetings of the two sides, there has not been a goalless draw. You have to go all the way back to 1994 for a 0-0 in this fixture.
Dortmund have led their last three games 2-1 before ending up with a 2-2 draw, so will be hoping to avoid that result again this week when they host the current league leaders.
Dortmund coach Lucien Favre faces his former club, while BVB players Marco Reus, Mahmoud Dahoud, Nico Schulz, and Thorgan Hazard were all on the books of Gladbach in the past.
Rest of the Week
Friday’s marquee tie of Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bayer Leverkusen also promises goals. Frankfurt haven’t kept a clean sheet in 18 home games against B04, while new signing Andre Silva has already settled better in Germany than he did in Italy. He has three goals in the last three games for the Eagles, already a better tally than the two goals he netted in 25 games for AC Milan last season.
Milot Rashica was back for Werder Bremen before the international break and got on the scoresheet, and has been involved in six goals in his last six games (three goals, three assists). They face an in-form Hertha Berlin side, who have won three games in a row.
Former Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has the Bundesliga record for the best start to a season with goals in the first eight games of a campaign, but could see Robert Lewandowski equal that record this weekend at Augsburg. The Poland hotshot has 11 goals in seven games so far this season and looks a sure bet for the top scorer trophy again.
Bundesliga Player of the Week – Christopher Nkunku – RB Leipzig – £1.08
RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku is proving to be one of the signings of the season so far, with a goal involvement every 57 minutes – for comparison, this is the exact same as Robert Lewandowski, with only Hertha Berlin’s Javairo Dilrosun more prolific in attack (contributing to a goal every 51 minutes). He is in line to start against Wolfsburg this weekend for a Leipzig side who always play well after international breaks (9 wins, 3 draws from 13 post-international break games).
