The Bundesliga is back again after the final international break of the season. Matchday 12 sees Borussia Mönchengladbach sit in first place and Marco Rose’s side are guaranteed to keep that position this weekend as they are four points clear of RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and surprise challengers Freiburg.
Bayern Munich have decided to keep faith in caretaker boss Hansi Flick, but the rumour mill has gone into overdrive since Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked as Tottenham Hotspur boss. Flick is set to remain as head coach until the winter break, having smashed Borussia Dortmund last time out.
Match of the Weekend – Werder Bremen vs Schalke
Werder Bremen head coach Florian Kohfeldt knows exactly how to beat Schalke, having won all of his three meetings with them. However, this is a much-improved Schalke side from last season’s outfit, with David Wagner starting well since his appointment.
Neither side have kept a clean sheet this season, so that is a good omen for the forwards of both sides. Milot Rashica has four goals since returning from injury, while Amine Harit is Schalke’s top scorer with five goals.
Rest of the Weekend
Borussia Dortmund’s last two home games against Paderborn have an aggregate scoreline of 10-1, so expect goals again in Friday night’s kick-off. Dortmund have scored in every home game since January 2018 and should see Paco Alcacer start after proving his fitness. Thomas Delaney was injured during the international break and won’t play again until January.
Eintracht Frankfurt have a dreadful record against Wolfsburg, winning just 18% of their games against the Wolves, but have home advantage on Saturday. Wolfsburg are on a run of three games without a goal, so a lot of pressure will be on Wout Weghorst to restore his early-season form.
Borussia Mönchengladbach remain at the top of the table and have a favourable fixture against Union Berlin this weekend. It’s the first-ever league game between the sides, with Gladbach coming into the match having won seven of their last eight games in the Bundesliga. Marcus Thuram can be their key player again and has five goals and five assists in their last seven games.
Bundesliga Player to Watch: Timo Werner – RB Leipzig – £4.03
Timo Werner is set to play his 200th Bundesliga game this weekend, and goes into the game against Köln with five goals and four assists in his last two matches.
He has 74 goals total in his first 199 league games, but the current season is on target to be his best return as he is averaging a goal every game in 2019-20.
